Natural antioxidants block ‘oxidation’ due to free radicals. Oxidation is similar to rusting.

What are free radicals?

Free radicals are everywhere. Atoms form the unit structure of any material. The atom is formed of a nucleus and electron. When an electron is not turning in harmony with the nucleus, it becomes unstable, carries high energy level that subsides only by attacking and joining another molecule. When those electrons come from oxygen we call it: oxidation. This phenomenon carries high energy. This energy is the unit of Atomic bombs!

Free Radicals: Both Enemy and Friend!

Wherever there is disease and destruction,there are free radicals.Wherever there is life, there are free radicals.

Free radicals perform many critical functions in our bodies.

They are produced by immune cells to fight and kill infections and cancer cells.

At the same time free radicals can go awry and damage the DNA of our cells and transform them into malignant ones.

The same free radicals when in excess trigger the oxidation of the lipids in the blood stream and inflammation, leading to atherosclerosis.

The same free radicals cause deterioration of joints and cause osteoarthritis.

When they are in excess in the liver, because of infection or other insults, they cause hepatitis that leads eventually to liver failure and cirrhosis.

Free radicals simply speed the process of the aging process.

Free radicals obviously need to be kept under control without being eliminated.

The antioxidant network:

They work together to provide the ultimate protection. When a natural antioxidant grabs a free radical, it becomes a weak free radical itself, and another antioxidant will help regenerate it.

There are 5 basic natural antioxidants:

Vitamin C:

  • Essential for the production of collagen, the cellular glue that keeps cells attached together. It strengthens the connective tissue.
  • Thought to protect against cataract, against lipid oxidation
  • Essential for immune system health.
  • Has the important job of recharging fat-soluble vitamin E when it becomes a free radical itself.

Vitamin E:

Poor Vitamin E, it has been the subject of attack of allopathic medicine recently.

Vitamin E is a family of molecules composed of four different tocopherols and four different tocotrienols, all nearly identical in structure.

Most vitamin supplements contain only one kind of Vitamin E-alpha-tocopherol but not the others. It is recommended that you take a mixture of the entire spectrum to get all the benefits.

  • Works with Vitamin C to prevent the oxidation of lipids in the blood stream and therefore may help prevent atherosclerosis.
  • Thought to protect against DNA damage into the cells and possibly prevent cancer cells formation.
  • Thought to protect smokers from the high free radical activity! Not that smokers have an excuse to smoke.
  • Thought to protect nerve cells from damage and it is recommended for its possible benefits in Parkinson’s disease.

Coenzyme Q 10:

  • Fat-soluble natural antioxidant. CoQ10 regenerates vitamin E in the antioxidant network.
  • useful beyond its role as antioxidant.
  • Involved in the krebs cycle, the mechanism in which the body produces ATP or fuel for the cells. CoQ10 is responsible for the production of energy that keeps the body running.
