insulin
Insulin: What about this famous hormone?
Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas gland.
Insulin is the only hormone that decreases sugar levels in our blood.
When deficient, insulin resistance and diabetes develops.
When in excess, hypoglycemia “low sugar levels” develops.
Insulin has gotten a bad reputation because of Dr. Atkins books. He considered insulin as the cause of obesity and heart disease and controlling it is the key for optimum health. Even though, I am a big fan of Dr. Atkins, I do not necessarily agree on many of his ideas obviously. There is no evidence that insulin by itself is the cause of the problem. Insulin becomes less effective 'insulin resistance' secondary to obesity, and controlling obesity will eventually leads to drop of insulin levels.
Controlling insulin levels is basically by controlling weight and not vice versa.
